In the world of social networking, Facebook reigns supreme.

These days more and more companies, brands, organizations and even bands are using the social networking platform to improve their visibility, consolidate their target audience, and stay connected with their customers or fans.

Setting up a Facebook fan page or group is free, fast, and simple enough that almost anyone can do it.

The first thing you’ll want to do before setting up a Facebook Page or Group is to set up a Facebook profile of your own, if you don’t already have one.

Although Facebook Pages can be created without an account linked to them, every Group needs an administrator – that person sets up and maintains the group, and his or her Facebook profile will be linked to it.

Since most people these days already have Facebook profiles, you might be able to skip this step.

If not, head over to Facebook and sign yourself up – the process is free, takes only minutes, and all you need to get started is a valid email address.

Once you’ve got your Facebook account set up, you’re ready to start creating your Pages or Groups.

It’s important when choosing whether to create a Page or a Group to note that Facebook no longer allows “fake” Pages or unofficial fan Pages – although it’s perfectly fine to set up Groups for that purpose.

To set up a Facebook Page, simply visit Facebook’s “Create a Page” center, at facebook.com/pages/create.php and follow the step-by-step instructions.

Facebook will ask you for a category and a name, and will ask you to certify that you are authorized to set up the page, finally collecting a “digital signature,” simply a text field in which you type your full name.

Once you’ve finished that, you’ll arrive at the basic Page, where you can start adding media like videos and photos, linking to external content, posting status updates, or generally “filling out” the Page with information about your band, company, organization, or whatever you’re using Facebook to market or advertise.

Groups are typically less authoritative, but more interactive than Pages.

In order to create Groups, you’ll need to be logged in to your Facebook account before visiting facebook.com/groups/create.php, clicking the “Create a New Group” button and following the creation process.

Setting up a group requires slightly more information than setting up a Page, but can be done by anyone, not just an authorized individual.

You’ll need to choose a group name, a network to whom the group will be available (chosen from among the networks your profile belongs to), and a group category.

Additionally, you’ll have the option of adding information like recent news, location or email address.

Once you’ve finished that process, and clicked the “Create Group” button, you’re ready to go!

Maintaining Pages and Groups is a fairly similar process.

You can add rich media like pictures, videos, events and links, as well as adding biographical information, status updates, or just about anything else that people share on Facebook.

The next step is, of course, finding Facebook members who are interested in your Facebook Page or Group, but that’s a topic for another day’s discussion.

Social Media websites represent the future of communication.

The sooner your business or organization gets on board, the better the results will be.

Gathering as many Fans (Facebook) and Followers (Twitter) as possible means you are increasing your direct advertising pool.

This is a list of the top six ways to use Facebook and Twitter to your benefit.

1. Familiarize Yourself

Social Media sites are very complex. There are classes available in most areas which can teach you the basics. Spending time exploring on your own is going to be the best way to get a hang of all the features and how to use them correctly. Start off with creating personal profiles for yourself. You’ll be a hands-on learner, and will probably be surprised at how many old friends from your past you run into!

2. Never Miss a Networking Opportunity

While you are learning the basics with your personal profile, don’t miss out on opportunities with those old friends that are coming out of the woodwork–or, for that matter, any friends or family. Tell them about your business, invite them to be fans or followers, and encourage them to spread the word.

3. Get a Social Media Intern

In the first few years of Facebook’s existence it was exclusive to students. Now that Social Media is available to everyone, students and recent grads are still the most active users, and they have much more knowledge and experience than the generations who finished college pre-Social Media. In today’s cut-throat economy, students and recent grads are on the lookout for work experience and positive references, and will often work for a lower wage or even free. Contact your local college’s Career Services department for information on how you can post an ad for an intern.

4. Keep it Fun

Facebook and Twitter are leisure activities for most users. When they sign up to be a Fan or Follower of your business, they want to be entertained. When you post tweets or status updates, keep them fun and upbeat. Don’t always focus them on business. Randomness and humor will draw attention. On Facebook you can get into the nitty-gritty details on your business’s profile page, which people will visit often if you lure them in with entertaining status updates.

5. Be Creative with your Name

On Facebook, the name of your Fan page doesn’t necessarily have to be your business name. Users tend to be more inclined to become Fans of something that provides their own viewers with a little snippet of “them”. For example, if you own Joe’s Cell Phone Shop, you might name your Fan page “Unlimited Free Texting.” This way, your customers are “Fans of Unlimited Free Texting” rather than “Fans of Joe’s Cell Phone Shop.” Then when they become intrigued and click on your page, you can explain that Joe’s Cell Phone Shop is the place to go to get unlimited free texting.

6. Give Customers an Incentive

In order to get exposure on Social Media, you need lots of Fans and Followers. The problem is, not many people outside of your own personal circle will promote you out of the goodness of their hearts. This is where you offer something free, or discounted. TGI Friday’s recently offered a coupon for a free burger to the first 50,000 customers who became their Fans on Facebook. They got their 50,000 Fans in a matter of days! If you can’t afford to give away tons of freebies, try offering participation in a contest or giveaway. Get creative and have fun!

Facebook is one of the top of social networking sites on the Internet.

The site was founded by a Harvard University student named Mark Zuckerberg who began the site as a way for students at the university to network with each other. This limited social networking site eventually expanded to include campuses in the Boston area.

Soon even that was not enough.

Facebook became the number one tool for social networking on college campuses. After seeing much success, the owner of Facebook opened the site up to high school students and then eventually to anyone who is over the age of 13.

Since 2004, Facebook has grown to include more than 200 million active users. These users are located throughout the United States and worldwide. The main appeal of the website is that people can search for their friends, coworkers, and family members and as them as friends. People can also search for new friends according to what networks they belong to. Networks can include colleges, high schools, places of business, and geographical locations.

Users of Facebook have a number of options to communicate with their list of friends. In a similar way to Twitter, Facebook users can update their status and let their friends know what they are up to. Friends can also communicate public messages on another user’s wall. Private messages are sent to the user’s on site inbox.

A surge in the number of affiliated applications have also provided additional ways to communicate between friends. These applications are used for giving virtual gifts, displaying favorite sports teams or televisions shows, and sharing other fun information.

Facebook also has a number of features that allows for a more business approach to using the social networking site. The Notes section of Facebook allows people to write open messages for all of their friends to see. The Notes section also provides a way to share updates from any RSS feed from a blog.

The marketplace on Facebook works similarly to Craigslist. Users can post an ad to sell a product or service, buy a product or service, and announce events. The the option to create groups is another way for users to create a buzz for a brand, promote a business, or just meet people with similar interests.

Facebook does also have its share of drawbacks. The site has experienced privacy issues in the past. The website has also been used by businesses to discover more about potential employees, which has led to many people being turned down for jobs because of the content on their Facebook page. But with additions to the choice of privacy settings, Facebook has continued to evolve to meet the needs of all its users.

Even with the problems that can occur with a Facebook account, millions of people have successfully used the site to connect with friends, far away family members, and even new customers for business.

As the site continues to grow, users are constantly finding better ways to utilize this remarkable social networking tool.

When I’m not tweeting, you can find me at my Facebook account.

Twitter is a social networking site with a twist. Twitter offers users the ability to connect with friends, coworkers, and clients by answering one simple question: What are you doing?

The catch, however, is that the question must be answered in 140 characters or less – including spaces.

The answer to this question is known as a tweet. Tweets can be simple sentences, short links to other webpages, or links to pictures. Users of Twitter subscribe to their favorite Twitter users. This is known as following someone. A user’s followers will get updates on their home page every time someone updates their answer. If users follow each other, they also have the option to send direct messages to each other. These are similar to private messages on other social networking sites.

Twitter was created by Jack Dorsey in 2006. It quickly gained popularity and surpassed the popularity of other networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. I joined twitter back in 2007 when Shoemoney talks about it in one of his blog post. That account was suspended as I was merely using it to post my latest blogs post using Twitterfeed lol.

Twitter has moved past the basic web tool that it started out to be. Now many users Twitter from their phones, as long as the phone can send and receive SMS (short message service) messages or use an application with devices like the iPhone. Telephone gateway numbers exist for the United States, India, Canada, and the United Kingdom so that people around the world can update their Twitter account from almost anywhere. Twitter is a completely free service, although users that Twitter from a cell phone will still pay the normal text messaging fees as per their provider’s service agreement.

According to a recent survey, Twitter is the fastest-growing social networking site on the Internet. The survey found that Twitter has seen a growth of more than 1300% since the beginning of the year. To put this in perspective, Facebook has seen less than a 300% increase in the same amount of time. And the trend keeps growing. Monthly visitors to the website are at an estimated at 6 million people.

Unlike Facebook and other social networking sites, Twitter is not just for the young and Internet savvy. Many people find it easier to use than other social networking options for staying in touch and networking for business. In fact, many celebrities and politicians are utilizing Twitter to reach a wider audience and bypass traditional media routes to get their message heard.

Those with blogs and Internet businesses have also found Twitter to be a successful marketing tool. With applications such as TweetLater, Twitterfeed, Ping.fm, and Twitpic, business owners can provide followers with information on updates, new products, and contests. While Twitter has not replaced the email newsletter, customers find using Twitter easier to get updates for their favorite businesses without clogging their inbox.

Because Twitter is still a new sensation in the social networking world, the owners of Twitter are still looking to improve the site with additional options for users and ways to help people make better connections. At the moment, the owners want to keep Twitter as a free service and that does not seem likely to change anytime soon though there are a lot of hype lately that they are selling twitter.

Good reading blogs on everything twitter :-

The world wide web has revolutionized the life of a freelance writer. It has opened up countless new markets, all available through a simple search (no more poring through writer’s market guides) and has sped up the process of writing, seeing your work published, and getting paid. In the old days, it could take months – even years – to see submitted work in print, and checks would arrive long after you forgot making a submission. Today, you can write, post, and receive payment in a week or less.

Writing skills, of course, are as important as ever. Though electronic technology has changed the rules of grammar and punctuation for informal email communication and text messages, writers who want to get paid to produce web content or to find offline writing work using the Internet must be able to demonstrate strong writing skills. Although more opportunities exist for beginning writers who are still honing their skills, the standards for professional content have not changed.

As new markets have appeared online, so have websites devoted to writers. Many offer inherent freelance writing opportunities. Associated Content and Constant Content are two such sites many writers find profitable.

Associated Content (http://www.associatedcontent.com/) bills itself as “The People’s Media Company.” Nearly anyone can write an article for publication here, so it’s a great place for beginning writers to start. The site’s editors pay small amounts (usually about $3-$5) for full rights on well written articles that suit their needs, including articles on local attractions, products, events, and popular culture. Writers can respond to calls for content or submit anything they choose. Those articles that are not accepted for upfront payment are eligible to receive per-hit performance payments. Promoting articles is largely up to the writers, who comment on others’ work and post links on social networking sites to draw traffic to their AC page and increase performance payments.

Constant Content (http://www.constant-content.com/) accepts articles from skilled writers, who can offer three levels of rights – Use, Unique, and Full – which loosely correspond to the one-time rights and full rights offered in traditional writing markets. (Unique is much like first rights, but without the option to resell one-time rights to someone else.) Buyers browse or request articles to buy for use on their websites. Authors set their own prices. A commission fee is taken out of the sale price, and authors can receive a percentage from the sales made by writers they refer.

Freelance market sites, such as Elance.com, iFreelance.com, and Guru.com, help match freelance writers and other freelance professionals to companies with freelance projects. Elance.com charges commissions for projects and flat rates for listings. iFreelance.com advertises no commission but requires writers to pay a monthly membership fee. Guru.com charges writers both membership fees and project commissions. All three require you to compete directly with other writers for specific jobs, and pay varies by project.

Helium.com combines writing contests with topic guides and a marketplace for writers. Freelancers can submit articles on specific requested topics to earn $20 or more, submit articles that readers can rate, or enter various writing contests.

Several additional sites hire freelancers to produce content. Many of these promote themselves as “answer” websites, where freelance experts on various subjects write basic guides on the topics about which they are knowledgeable. Suite101.com pays writers a share of their advertising revenue and requires an application with samples to join. Mahalo.com, “the world’s first human-powered search engine,” pays for freelancers to put together search-result guides to websites on specific topics. Lifetips.com hires “gurus” to write tips on their niche areas of expertise.

For those who want to write what they choose, rather than writing for requested topics, blogging is a viable option. Many writers make a living from advertising revenues generated by their own blogs. Freelancers who have strong marketing skills, adequate computer skills, and the ability to write about life from an uncommon perspective should consider starting their own blog.

Alternatively, you may find paid blogging opportunities on established group blogs. Read blogs on your favorite topics and keep an eye out for announced writing opportunities. Blogs of medium popularity (which have established an audience but which don’t have too much competition for open writing spots) are the best for freelance opportunities. Those with their own sites, as opposed to those connected to sites like Blogger.com, also seem more likely to generate enough income to hire freelancers. Blogging for others can provide you with a regular income but without the hassle of continuously marketing your work.

Social networking sites also offer opportunities to promote your writing career. Reconnect with old friends on MySpace or Facebook; they may have writing work to offer you or know someone who does. Use your profile to promote articles you have published on sites that share ad revenue or pay you per hit. Sign up for Linked In, where you can list your experience résumé style and wait for professional writing opportunities to come to you.

A few social networking sites also pay directly for you to publish your articles. Associated Content (mentioned above) works much like a social networking site, where the more you comment, the more subscribers you attract. Gather.com, a niche social site for readers and writers, pays points (redeemable for gift certificates) for your participation – both publishing articles or photographs and commenting on others’ posts. The most active members can earn cash instead of points. Earning cash on Gather, however, requires many hours on the site; you are likely to earn more by writing for a variety of freelance sites.

Consider marketing your writing skills on general auction and classified sites, as well. Advertise your strengths and offer a specific service (such as writing copy for a brochure) in eBay’s Specialty Services category, which unfortunately does not have a writing subcategory, or try a less well known auction site, such as BidHire.com (a new site designed specifically for services). Post your availability as a freelancer on Craigslist.com and browse local job listings on that site. The Internet has a multitude of ways to find buyers for your work.

If your writing tends to be book length, and you can’t find a traditional publisher for your work, try self-publishing via the Internet. In addition to the online presence of old-fashioned self-publishing houses, sites like Lulu.com help you put together, promote, and sell your self-published book or e-book. E-books can also be created using Adobe Acrobat and sold through your own personal blog or specialty sites related to the topic of your book. To increase sales, make your e-book as professional as possible, with well written text and a cover that does not look amateurish. Perhaps you can enlist a copy editor and a graphic designer who are willing to work on a commission of your sales. (Check your contacts on social network sites!) Knowing your target audience and marketing directly to them also helps sell e-books.

Remember that organizations that offer you help in publishing or marketing your work are providing you a service, so expect to pay for their assistance. Before you pay for any services up front, consider whether you are confident enough that your work will earn you enough to make up the costs. Start with sites that pay a small amount or charge only a sales commission before moving on to sites with a membership fee.

Freelance writing does involve taking some risks, especially when you first start. You may spend many hours writing on speculation, only to receive a series of rejections. Writing is a competitive field, and even excellent writers sometimes have difficulty finding the right market for their work. Nevertheless, the Internet truly has opened up a whole new world for writers. While traditional venues, such as short story magazines that provided the staple income for F. Scott Fitzgerald, are becoming difficult to enter, the world wide web allows more and more people to earn money with freelance writing. As you explore the sites mentioned here, you will gain experience and build your portfolio, making your services more valuable to potential customers both online and off.

Twitter has added methods to the Twitter API that make it a lot easier to get full follower lists and process them.

You can probably expect to see many more Twitter applications offering the ability to automatically unfollow those people who unfollow you.

If that feature appeals to you, I want you to know the risk of using it (if you want to use another service that competes with TweetLater), and how we protect you from those risks (if you’re using TweetLater‘s auto unfollow feature).

The Twitter API gives one a full list of the current followers of a Twitter user. One figures out who have unfollowed you by comparing the current list with an older list that was retrieved from the API say an hour or a day ago.

Those folks on the old list who are not on the current list are those who have unfollowed you.

That works very well until there is a glitch in the Twitter API (yes there sometimes are glitches with the API just like the Twitter web interface) and it returns an empty or incomplete list of current followers.

If that happens, it will look as if most, if not all, of your followers have unfollowed you.

Applications that are unprepared for this situation will destroy most, if not all, your follow relationships in a few seconds.

TweetLater will not do that.

To protect you, TweetLater will never unfollow more than 10 people in a single follower comparison.

In other words, if you have 500 followers, and a glitch in the Twitter API says you now have only 100, TweetLater will not unfollow the difference of 400. It will unfollow only 10 of that 400.

If, with the next follower comparison, Twitter still incorrectly says you only have 100 followers, TweetLater will again unfollow only 10 people.

Please be careful who you trust with your follower management. The next bright and glitzy application out there may not be your safest bet.

On a personal note, I will never use the auto unfollow feature myself. For me the power of Twitter lies in what you learn from other people, and I don’t care whether they follow me or not.

Michael A. Stelzner, published author and founder of WhitePaperSource, has released a great report on the best tools to use for and the benefits of social marketing.

Download the report right now, and put away your credit card. There’s nothing to pay.

Did you know that 64 percent of marketers are spending five or more hours weekly using social media sites like Twitter, and that 72 percent have been at it for only a few months?

Do you know what is the median age?

Wondering which social media tools marketers are using the most?

Those questions are answered, along with a closer look what the most experienced folks are using.

To build the report, Michael analyzed nearly 700 open-ended responses and summarized all the major questions that marketing pros want answered.

Regardless of your experience with social media marketing, there’s something in the report for you.

If you’re a beginner, learn from the time commitment, benefits and tools that your peers are using.

If you’ve been at this for a while, compare yourself against other marketers, see what tools they’re looking at next and see whether you’re achieving the same benefits as your more experienced competitors.

If you’re a social media guru, there’s a lot of data in the report to help you develop a ton of “How to” products. You’ll want to pay close attention to the top 10 questions section.

Download the report right now.

Did I mention, it’s free?

Dangers of Social Networking.

Millions of people across the world use social networking sites such as Facebook, Bebo or Myspace.

However, few of them consider the risks that these sites could pose to potential jobs.

According to a survey commissioned by the Information Commissioner’s Office, almost 60% of those questioned did not realise that the information could remain online and thus be viewed in the future.

Even in the present, however, social networking sites can be seen as a possible pitfall for job seekers.

Potential employers looking to fill any reasonably important position will wish to conduct some background research on their applicants.

Employers can be nervous about hiring unknown staff and will welcome any innovation that makes their choice easier.

By viewing an applicant’s social networking profile they can presented with a candid and unedited portrayal of a person, rather than merely the censured version presented by references and other traditional sources.

This can be seen as a positive step for the applicant, as a Facebook page that depicts a sober, hard-working and enthusiastic person can only aid in a job application.

However, the vast majority of Facebook profiles will show no such thing.

Everyone acts differently amongst their friends then with bosses or colleagues.

The vast majority of Facebook profiles will show their creator either drunk, naked, unconscious, rude, crude, or felonious.

Whether these are isolated incidents or examples of an overly hedonistic life, they present a poor image of a person and so would likely deter potential employers from hiring them.

Facebook and other social networking sites can therefore be seen as presenting a falsely balanced view of a person as they only represent how the person acts with their friends, in company they feel comfortable with.

An applicant could be highly professional and perfect for a position; one stupid decision recorded on Facebook could prevent them from getting the job.

One often-unforeseen danger of social networking sites is where the information ends up.

A name or photo from Facebook can be taken and used again and again, on any number of websites.

One example of the chaotic results that can ensue from such actions is a risqué photo put up on Facebook.

If the photo were a one-off it would most likely be viewed as embarrassing rather than employment harming.

However, should an annoyed friend or jilted lover take the photograph and name, and place it on a variety of less savoury websites, then a quick Google search may present false and negative depiction.

Even a cursory search of the Internet provides a plethora of stories centred on the dangers of social networking sites.

One of the more interesting comes from an article from Medscape, a site for medical students.

The article makes the point that a medical student especially must be careful what information appears online about them.

With the amount of patients they will treat in their career the likelihood is that they will be researched online.

Thus the importance of a medical student maintaining at least the illusion of a clean and sober social life is key, both to reassure patients and to persuade hospital bosses that they are a good choice for often over-subscribed positions.

The question of whether employers are right to be using social networking sites in this way is a thorny one.

Facebook’s Terms and Conditions specify that the service is to be used solely for ‘personal, non-commercial use only’.

Whilst no one would dare to claim that recruiters using it stick to these rules, the inability to regulate them means that they can continue to do so.

Furthermore, any company would wish for their employees to go above and beyond the call of duty.

Should they be content for sordid episodes of their social life to be on display to the watching world then they demonstrate the poor judgement that no company would wish their workers to possess.

Thus Facebook can be seen as more of an unofficial test for any job applicant.

Considering how costly a bad hire can prove to an employer, can they be blamed for wishing to cover themselves as much as possible?

Whilst it can be seen as distasteful for an employer to use Facebook to examine prospective employees, reality will always triumph over morality in the modern world.
